The role oft he movie industry in the ‘Greyhound Tragedy’ story

Who does not dream to be a star in Hollywood? The girl in the story doing it, she has a big dream. She wants to be a famous personality, like the people in her magazines. Her father has a different opinion, he wants his daughter to deal with real things and marry a young Ford salesman. Her father is he manager of a Penny’s, he knows how the hard, real life goes, therefore he dislike the plan of the girl, also because she is at home for just about 3 years, since she is out of Highshool. From 1929 to 1948 the Great Depression dominate the United States. It began in August 1929, when the United States economy first went into an economic recession. But many stars struggling with depressions, because they are always in public and they have to act perfectly. Cartoonanalyse in Englisch ( Bitte hilft mir )

In the cartoon, which is black-and-white drawing, you can see two men, which are standing to each other. The man on the left side is little and lean. His clothes are cracked. The other man on the right side appears strong and wealthy because of his buisness suit and bag. The cartoon includes a speech that is called Australian mateship and the use of the wordMate``. In addition there are two speechs bubbles. The little man asks to the big man: Exuse me mate. Could you spare a coupleof dollars for a cup of coffee.and the strong man answers: Sorry Mate.

The words in the cartoon underline the cartonnists message. The cartoonist wants to show to the viewer that the wordmate have not always the same meaning. You can say that there are two types of mateship. One of the type is that mates spend much time and tell their secrets etc. But in this cartoon the viewer gets the impression that the mens meet for the first time and they are notmates. The little man wants that the strong man helps him but he did not want and he excused himself in a friendly way. But you know appart of the clothes that he has enough money, so he could spend money .The cartoonist expresses thtat Australian peoples are friendly and polite to each other and for this reason they use the wordmate. But this situation does not agree thereal`mateship because real mates would always help themselves. In this cartoon is the strong man avaricious but he excuseshim politely.

I think the cartoon is easy to understand because if you know what mateship means in Australia, it is clear that in this case friendship does not have the same meaning. Therefore you find out that the word mate has several meanings for Australian peoples.

Englisch: Letter to the editor

Ich musste erst letztens einen letter to the editor (Leserbrief) schreiben. Da das, im Fach Englisch, für mich eine völlig neue Textsorte ist, wollte ich fragen, ob sich jemand bereitstellen würde, sich meinen Text anzusehen und zu sagen, was er davon hält. Danke!

Hier der Text:

Dear Sir, I am writing about the recent article in your newspaper regarding the smoking ban in restaurants in the City of Wausau. In my opinion, the implementation of this law to prohibit smoking is really difficult and unclear. However, as a non-smoker I believe the basic idea behind is a good step forward to change the environment in restaurants in a good way.

Firstly, the atmosphere of a restaurant is probably the most important aspect for a customer. I often notice that the unpleasant smell and look of smoking areas make a restaurant to a not welcoming and inviting place. The smoking ban makes it possible to the public to have a better atmosphere but also a healthier environment.

Smoking also means high costs. A smoker have to pay every month hundreds of dollar for cigarettes depending on how much he smokes. The smoking ban could maybe encourage people to smoke less and to save money. Nevertheless, this is only the point of view of a non-smoker.

There is also another point, which is possibly of even greater importance. Health problems related to smoking are often a much-debated topic in public. Many smokers suffer from arterial damage, heart disease or osteoporosis. The poisonous chemical tar causes damage to the lungs and pharynx. In a restaurant, a smoking ban can protect the non-smokers not to smoke passively and endanger their health.

At this point, I would like to express again my doubts about the implementation of such a law. I think it is difficult to enforce a smoking ban in every restaurant. There is always someone, who breaks the law. Every innkeeper should be able to decide whether to ban smoking or not. I hope my suggestions will be taken into consideration. Yours sincerely ...
