Charlotte got serious: "Jake, I'm not a kid anymore. I know what 1%ers do, and I had a friend 20 years ago who wanted to be a Bandito! It is organized crime!"
Jake raised his hand: "Whoa, whoa, slow down, lady. We're not all like that. Sure, some of us have... pasts, but most of us are just trying to live our lives, ride our bikes, and enjoy the freedom of the road. We have rules, we help our brothers and sisters, and we don't mess with the innocent. Hey... you had a biker boyfriend?"
The question made Charlotte uneasy. "Yes, a long time ago," she said, her voice softer. "But it didn't work out, he was..." she paused, searching for the right words, "he loved his Harley more than me."
Jake's grin faded to a knowing smile. "They can be a demanding lover," he said, nodding toward the window where the bikes gleamed in the setting sun. "But they can also be a hell of a ride."
Charlotte smiled and tried to change the subject: "What's your bike?"
"Ah, that's my beauty over there," Jake said, jerking his thumb toward a sleek black Harley-Davidson parked outside. "A custom job. Not like the ones you see on the highway."
Charlotte looked at the bike: "Hm, I think the basis is a Softail?"
Jake's smile widened. "Good guess, but it's a Fat Boy. Customized to perfection. You know about bikes?"
Charlotte smiled: "No, not really. Like I said, I had a boyfriend who was in love with a Harley. He infected me a bit with the virus. I just had a used Yamaha SR 250".
"That's a good start," Jake said with a smile. "But nothing compares to a Harley. Maybe I'll take you for a ride sometime."
Charlotte smiled: "My last ride ..." she chuckled ..." on a bike ... is 20 years ago!"
Jake laughed, "Well, that's a long time. But it's like riding a bike, you know, it's in your blood. You never forget!"
"Jake, I have no bike, no leatherjacket, no boots, not even a helmet anymore," Charlotte protested.
"Don't worry, honey," Jake said with a wink. "I've got you covered."
Charlotte smiled and winked: "Sure, a good trick to get my measurements for a leather-jumpsuit!"
Jake laughed, "Good one, you got spirit! I like that!"
The waitress brought coffee and apple pie. The smell was heavenly, a perfect end to the day. Charlotte took a sip, savouring the bitter taste mixed with the sweetness of the apple pie.
"To be honest, I would like to ride a bike again," Charlotte remarked thoughtfully.
Jake leaned closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "How about it, then? When you're done here, I'll take you for a spin."
Charlotte smiled: "Real tempting...riding a Harley. But, Jake, I am already late and have a long ride home. Not today, please!"
"Your call," Jake said, his eyes shining with good humour. "But give me your card; I'll call you later and we'll make a date when you can feel the wind in your hair again."
Charlotte thought for a moment before pulling a business card out of her wallet and sliding it across the counter. "Okay, I'll think about it." She couldn't deny the excitement of the prospect of going out with him, but she was cautious.
Jake took the card with a smile, not forcing the issue. "I see... "Charlotte Roush" from Midland. “Roush” ... what’s that, no plane English, am I right?”
“No”, Charlotte chuckled. “It’s written this way for the right pronunciation. I have German roots. In German it means exhilaration, thrill.”
Jake loudly laughed: “Oh yes, you are a thrill. Never met someone which such a matching second name! Just remember, we're not all bad guys. Some of us have hearts of gold underneath that leather."
Charlotte had finished her pie and coffee. "So, Jake, I got to go now. You have my number and if you have time, a bike, a leatherjacket, boots, a helmet for me, I will consider your offer!" she laughed, "I know, I am postulating!"
Jake nodded with a grin. "All right, Counsellor. I'll be in touch."
