The painting „The girls with the pearlearing“ by Jan Vermeer is published in the years 1665 and shows a girl in a ¾ portrait.
The picture is an upright rectangle format and is painted with oil on canvas.
In the picture you can see a young woman who is looking towards the viewer. Her body is in a profil position but her head is half turned to the viewer. It's in a ¾ portrait.
Her face is placed in the center of the painting. The girl itself occupies about 2/3 of the space of the painting. The background is black.
She wears a blue and yellow cloth around her head, so you can't see her hear. She also wears a brown top with a white collar and a large grew pearearing, that reflects the light. The light shines from the upper lefthand corner and light her face. Her facial expression is the eyecatcher of the painting. At first you think she would look straight towards the viewer but actually she pass the eyecontact and looks to the ground in the lower righthand corner. Her face looks pleasant. Her skin is plane and her eyes are large and light brown. You can hardly see her thin eyebrows. Her red lips are a little bit opened so you can see her white teeth.
There is barely a degree of abstraction because the painting has many details. The painters target was to portray the real scene. There are only small fissures in the surface, because the colours lost their water with the time.
The picture has a high dark-light contrast, because the light shines straight at the face of the girl and also there is a dark-light cotrast between herself and the black background. It emphasise her facial features and it makes the scene more dramatic. It seems there is nothing than darkness behind her. So the girl catchs the full attention of the viewers eye.The black background can be a symbol of the emotional life of the girl. It's a obscure colour, maybe the painter wasn't sure about her thoughts. The girl itself was a mystery for him.
After a first look she seems to have a neutral expression but when you look closer you recognise there is sadness and insecurity. She doesn't dare to hold eyecontact and looks shy to the ground.
This painting could tell mutch about the relationship between her and the painter Vermeer. It seems she is close to him and not just a model. Like in the book „The girl with the pearearing“ by Tracy Chevalier it could be, that the young woman has romantic feelings about the painter and also she seems to have great respect, because of her shy expression.
In my opinion it's a fascinating painting. Everytime you look at it you find another detail or expression in the eyes of the girl. You can feel the tension betwee
