The Short Story „A clean, well-lighted place “, by Ernest Hemingway, is about two waiters, talking about visitors at late night.
At the beginning of the story the older waiter, who is the protagonist of the story, is talking with a colleague, a younger waiter, about a old and deaf café visitor, who usually drinks whiskey late into the night. They sit in a “well lightened cafe” and are living during a war. Those old man tried to kill himself once because of his loneliness, but his niece saved him.
The younger waiter has a wife at home, so he complains about the staying of the old man, but the protagonist understands him and argues for him.
After chasing the old visitor away, the younger waiter is going home, while the older waiter keeps continuing the conversation with himself and goes to a different café, where he changes into a “Otro loco mas” (Another crazy one in Italian) because of singing about “nada” (nothing). He keeps talking about estimating “clean, well-lightened cafe” and says at the end, that he suffers on insomnia.
