“Tanz der Vampire“ is one of the ultimate vampire productions that has been very popular for a long time now and after seeing the performance (2 June 2018) with a great story line, an incredible stage design, amazingly talented actors, moving songs and perfectly synchronised dancing it is no surprise that the demand for this musical was so big that they had to add three whole months of performances in Cologne.
In the three hours long performance crazy professor Abronsius (Victor Petersen) who studies vampires and his student assistant Alfred (Tom van der Ven) come to a small village in which everyone is surround by suspicious amounts of garlic. Abronsius and Alfred find accommodation in a public house and soon the young student falls in love with Sarah (Maureen Mac Gillavry), the beautiful daughter of the public house’s owner. Count Krolock (David Arsnperger) is also very interested in her and breaks into her room where they meet for the first time. After being fed up with being locked up in her room, she runs away to the vampire’s castle, interested in the mysterious vampire. The professor and Alfred run after her to rescue her and end up at the castle where they encounter Count Krolock, who is the boss of the vampires, and his son Herbert (Christian Funk) for the first time. While this could be the perfect start for a cliché story where the kind hearted good guy and the bad vampire who is nothing but evil fight for the beautiful girl and in the end everything falls together and everyone lives happily ever after, this is not what happens and the story line takes surprising turns by portraying the vampires as actually very lonely creatures that are trapped in their eternity and an ending that you would not expect. As if that was not already enough, the writers and producers also managed to create a perfectly balanced mix between very serious, emotional scenes and funny ones that make you laugh out loud.
