Interpretation Cartoon American Dream?

The cartoon title by author published in date refers to the American Dream and his unrealistic promises toward the Americans especially the middle class.

The cartoon consists of two main visual elements: the people and the bubbles.

In the upper half of the picture you can see several bubbles, which are vary in their size. The three biggest bubbles are located in the middle of the picture and they are labeled with the words “The American Dream”. In the lower half of the picture there are numerous people, some of them men and some women. The clothing is diverse, most of the people wear a casual T-shirt and jeans or a top and a skirt. Only one men wears a suit with a tie. All the people have the same position, they look up with an open mouth and trying to reach for the bubbles. On the man in the middles shirt there are the words middle class. The key point the cartoonist is trying to make is to expose the fact, that the American Dream is way harder to achieve than it was back then, especially for the middle class it is nearly impossible to achieve the American Dream. In the cartoon the people metaphorically represent the middle class and the bubbles represent the American Dream. Nowadays the middle class is still trying to reach for the American Dream which is illustrated in the cartoon, but because of the economic recession it ist not that easy to have your own house, a stable income and to provide a better life for your children, which is considered as the American Dream. So you can say today the American dream is mainly a meaningless statement to motivate the middle class to even work harder, but only with hard work under todays circumstances you can’t achieve the American Dream. In my opinion the cartoonist did a great job, his critic towards the American Dream is appropriate. We are in a different era than we were, everything changed but also the goals should change. I think that the goal of the American Dream is outdated, and thats why I like the cartoon it encourages to question the legitimacy of the American Dream.

Gut interpretiert!
