From Figg to Queensberry

The origins of modern boxing lie in 17 th and 18 th century England.

In 1681, the Duke of Albemarle organized the first written battle. Since 1698 regular boxing events have been held at the Royal Theater in London.

The first (minimal) rules of modern times were set up by fencing master James Figg. 1719 Figg won the first official boxing tournament since ancient times and became champion of England.

In 1743, the first major rules (Broughton Rules) were published, which sometimes even as the first version of the London Prize Ring Rules apply (in the broad sense). You were not allowed to beat an opponent who was lying on the ground, low blows were also forbidden.

In 1838 these were replaced by the London Prize Ring Rules (ieS.). Most important innovations: The introduction of a boxing ring, which did not exist before and the bandage of the hands, in order to reduce injuries.

From 1892 Only Queensberry boxes

Only from Sullivan's successor Jim Corbett 1892 boxed one only to Queensberry style. A man who had opened a boxing school after Figg.

Only after the Second World War, the idea prevailed that a knocked-down boxer is always counted to eight (mandatory eight count), before the fight was resumed when the boxer got up again. Nowadays, other gloves (8 or 10 ounces) are boxed as well at the end of the 19th century (4 to 6 ounces). Such rule changes are not considered as new rules. Therefore, it is said that the Queensberry rules are still being fought even if the fighting is different today.
