Step 1: Write a short introduction in which you present the character(s) and his or her (their) situation.

Step 2: Organise your notes into paragraphs. Every paragraph should deal with one characteristic feature (e.g. friendliness, carelessness, imagination, etc. are all characteristic features).

Present the evidence (words or sentences taken from the text that show that your interpretation is right) taken from the text and comment on it. Dont forget to refer or quote the text.

Du musst auch darauf achten, dass du das innere der Peron und das äußerde Gegliedert auflistest und nicht alles zusammenwürfelst...

Ein Beispiel dazu...

At first Marian’s character is described as very cool and self-confident. He always knows what to say and it seems like nothing can bother him. But in contrast he is very shy and uncertain when he is together with Ammissa. On the one hand he always tries to offend Ammissa and to make her feel bad but on the other hand he protects her when she is in danger. Marian would never admit that he feels so much for her but he couldn’t hide that he is broken-hearted about the fact that she is together with Jasper. Finally his behaviour gets brutal and cold. He feels angry and is impolite to his friends. But in contrast he behaves friendlier toward Ammissa now. Every time when she is with him he feels joyful and happy but he never shows it to her. To sum it up, Marian is a young boy who is confused about his feelings. Marian hides his feelings as good as he can and he always dubs his sensitiveness with a cool and sometimes even rude and brutal behaviour.

Und stell Dir vor, das hab ich ergoolet, viel Erfolg ;)

Hallo,

aus den unendlichen Weiten des Internets:

How to write a characterization

A characterization is a description of all the features that make up a personality and its development. One can distinguish between two main methods:

• direct (explicit) characterization: the reader is told about a character’s personality directly by the author, by another character or by the character him/herself

• indirect (implicit) characterization: the reader is expected to draw conclusions about a character by studying his/her behaviour, opinions, choice of words and/or way of talking

Before you start working on your characterization find out how the character’s personality is revealed in the text. Possibilities:

• through the narrator’s description of his/her outward appearance

• through direct comments on his/her character

• by what he/she does, says or thinks

• by showing what other people think or say about him/her

Then collect the facts from the text and draw your conclusions about the person’s character! Look for…

• name, age, figure, clothes, height, sex

• language, nationality, general impression

• social background, family, kind of friends, profession

• what he/she does and says

• his/her behaviour (e.g. toward other characters) and actions

• thoughts, dreams, emotions, attitudes

• what other people say/think about him/her

Move from the outward features to the inward features/nature when writing your characterization. Do not forget to work with the text by using text reference and give examples for your findings, especially when you are working on the last four categories mentioned above.

Basically present tense is used in characterizations.
