The British empire began in the 15 century, the age of discovery. It was the largest and most powerful Empire in history. ¼ of the earth's surface was controlled by Britan. The British Empire is a term used to describe all the places around the world that were once ruled be Britain. The largest colonies Britain had, were India, USA, Canada, Australia and Egypt.
Britain had a huge power and they wanted more land overseas where they could build new communities, known as colonies. Colonies provide England with valuable materials (like sugar and metal) which they sell to other countries. Colonies were also beneficial because more people could work for the Britain's, so they were more places for poor and employed people.
Therefore, Britain earned a lot of money and created trade links. Furthermore, they received natural resources. Consequently, Britain had a huge influence on many countries and the language English became popular. They were a lot of English-speaking people over the world.
What were the advantages of the English Empire? It had great navel power. Also industrial advances and technical innovations. The military was strong. The politics and the economy were big and powerful. Great Britain was thus characterized by global trade. There were also colonies where slaves worked and this made great strides in the economy of England.
In the 19th century some of the states could govern themselves but they were still part of the British Empire. The first and the second world war let Britain to become weaker and less interested in its empire. Britain had no longer the great power to rule over the colonies. In the Asian and African colonies, nationalist movements started. They wanted to end British rule. In general, there were many colonies that wanted to be independence and fought for their freedom. By the late of 1960s, most of Britain's territories had become independent countries.
