Tony Blair, a former British prime Minister, said that “Blood alone” does not define national identity and that modern Britain was shaped by a “rich mix of all different ethnic and religious origin”.
- Comment on what Tony Blair said , taking the two definitions of national identity into account.
Defintion 1: There are different concepts of national identity. One concept defines national identity as a persons sense of belonging to a nation which is shaped by language and traditions. According to this idea, national identity is not an inborn trait and can change in the course of one’s life.
Defintion 2: The other concept of national identity is based on the idea of having the same ancestry or ethnicity. This idea reflects the original meaning of the word nationality. Nation comes from the Latin word “natus” which means born. Therefore the word nation can be understood as belonging to the same racial group. However this concept is problematic and outdated, since nowadays every nation has a mixed population.
