Abiturklausur Englisch LK Korrekturlesen?

Mein Text: 1. Comphreneison The text at hand, "Global Warming Sounds quite nice" written by Fiona Harvey and published on the 7th March 2014, critizizes the abstractness of scientific language for the general public in the political field of global warming. Along with that, the author demonstrates the broader implications global warming will raise in foreseeable future. The headline already indicates the authors critical attitude towards climate change, as it says "Global climate is a misleading term". In general, the texti s written in a very simple style, thus adressing the majority of the general public. One can divide the text into several parts of varying length. The first part (l1-17) consists of criticism directed against the language that is used in the centre of the heated debates around climate change. The author contrasts most scientific issues to climate change, as the former is, at least partially familiar to ordinary people, whereas the theme of climate change seems to be inaccessible for the public because of its accompanying abstruse terms and the miscommunication which does not suit the publics' intelectuallity. The next passage, puts focus on the term "global warming". According to the author, the term contributes to the failed communication, as its tone sounds dangerously harmless in relation to its adverse health effects on a global scale. Beyond, the author clarifies the gravity of global warmings´ consequences in the UK by drawing on forecasts, comparable to historical occurrences like the ice age.He adds, that there will be more extremes that amplify the current weather conditions across the globe. The following passage projects the global changes that will emerge from climate change, such as the global export of instability in form of migration, on grounds of uninhabitable weather conditions in Africa and Australia in the immediate future. The ending passage appeals to the readerships rationality. Harvey solidarizes himself with the audience by saying that global change is the one question mankind must answer correctly in order to prevent the planet from collapsing.

Firstly, Harvey confronts the reader with scientific terms that hardly occur in the colloquail language. She directly speaks to the readership "you" (l1,23) and ironically defines the terms "anthropogenic forcing" and carbon bubble (l1-2) as something that can be found in the bath or in ones pension fund. By raising the questions "Is the Greenhouse effect a better way to grow tomatoes?" (l1-2) and "And what is the difference between global warming and climate change?" the author makes the reader realize that he is most likely unfamiliar with these issues which suit her further line of argumentation, in which she states that ordinary people can not comprehend scientific vocabulary.
The second passage is tied to the first passage. Harvey visualizes the difficultie of understanding abstract scientific terms by comparing it to "sitting in an exam in an unfamiliar subject." (l.5-6) In addition to that, she begins to critizise the public debates around climate change, as they are unbearable for the average person. She supports her argument by comparing the public debate on climate change with former political issues like smoking and obesity "We can understand that smoking kills, even if we have not read the latest papers on how quickly a lung tumour metastatsies ocompared with other cancers. We know that obesity is bad for us, even if experts are still exploring[..]" (l10-11) To make her position even more trustworthy, she refers to the UN and expert opinions which warned scientists of using incomprehensive terms and defined "global warming" as a "misnomer" (l.15)
Her next argument focusses on the term global warming which is, in her view, misleading. She illustrates the harmless tone of the word by interpreting its consequences as "a couple of degrees hotter in summer - we could be sitting on our verandahs of an evening sipping Sauvignon Blanc from our own vineyards." She ends the passage with the words "who wouldnt want that?".
Furthermore, she alludes to prognoses which forecast a rise of 5°C in the UK due to climate change. She adds that This would match the difference between the iceages temperatures and the contemporary climate in order to convey a graphical impression to the readership
Another strategy of the author to persuade his british readers is to provide specific examples for the UK which direct the readers opinion in a subtle way. "in the UK, this will mean more storms and flods of the kind that have the country in the past two months"
Not only the british, but everyone gets driven by the authors way of writing. In the last passage the author raises two ironic questions "Who do you think has got climate science right?" and "Who do yu trust to tackle climate change? and places multiple choices under the questions which are implicit criticisms against the failure of the gouverment and big corporations to combat climate change.
In the last sentences, the author reveals that this multiple choice test is a sham. The irony is that there are no choices when it comes to climate change, according to the author anyway. In the ending passage, he solidarizies himself with the audience by saying that there is only one choice and employing "we" when talking about the combat against climate change. He uses it again in his last sentence in which he appeals to the audiences rationality "It is the one question we must answer correctly".
All in all, the authors position gets clear throughout the text. He advocates a closer connection to climate change for the public and is anxious to spread awareness for this sensitive topic which could influence our climate tremdenously.
