The film "Precious" is based on the novel ,,Push” by Sapphire. The film is a 2009 American drama directed by Lee Daniels. The film is set in 1987. The main characters in the movie are played by Gabourey Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Paula Patton and Mariah Carey. (Du schreibst zu oft "the film/movie", nimm ruhig den Titel) "Precious" is the acting debut of Gabourey Sidibe. Just like (in) the book, the story behind the film has got a very strong psychological influence on the viewer. Many aspects of the book were reduced in the movie, but the image is hardly conceivable.
Claireece "Precious" Jones is only 16 years old and pregnant for the second time. Her first child is disabled. The father of the children is Claireece’ own father, who had raped/rapes her. Furthermore she is illiterate, overweight and black. Later in the movie we get to know that Claireece is (, in addition) HIV-positive. Precious lives in Harlem with her mother, who always oppresses her own daughter. She never has learned what love means, because her father has never loved hear, just as her mother (never did). Precious has no self-confidence because her mother always says to her that she is worth nothing. Precious has never learned to believe in herself.
At the beginning, Precious is expelled from school because of her second pregnancy. However, the headmaster takes care of Precious, so that she can receive a good education. Precious can go to the school ,,Each One – Teach One”, where she speaks about her problems for the first time. She visits a class with six other teenagers who are illiterate, too. Next follows the climax of the conflict between Precious and her mother. It ends with Precious' mother throwing a TV at her daughter.
After Precious gets her second child she runs away from home. Precious' teacher allows her to live/stay ofr a few days at her house. The most shocking moment in the movie is, when Precious goes to the doctor. There she learns that she is HIV-positive. At the end Precious and her mother have a talk with Miss White, a social worker. During this talk, Precious' mother shows her feelings for the first time , revealing the reason why she hated her daughter all these years: She thought that her husband loves his own daughter more than his wife. But Precious can’t forgive her mother, because too many terrible things had happened in the past. Precious leaves her mother ("to leave alone" heißt "in Ruhe lassen") and takes her two children, for whom she wants to be a good mother, with her.
