Luxembourg
Luxembourg, official Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a country near Germany, Belgium and France. It has a population of more than half a million (502,066) on an aria of 2,586.4 km² .
Luxembourgian isn’t an official language, it’s only the national language of Luxembourg and it’s a mixing of French, German, Belgian and other languages. The official languages which are speaking in Luxembourg are German and French. Because it’s so small there are many jokes about Luxembourg, like: “Oh, we’ve already been through Luxembourg?”. Although it’s very small Luxembourg is very rich and important for Europe: Given its history, Luxembourg has always been overrun by foreigners in various wars and became a melting pot for the “European thought”, that means that all people who are living in Europe shall see themselves as Europeans in addition to their own national origin.
In the middle ages, Luxembourg has been part of the German group of countries, baronies, earldoms and others within the fragile construct of a “German State of Wholly Nations”. After various attacks, Luxembourg became part of France and the Burgundy in 1443, only to become Dutch in 1477. In 1815, it got its status as “Grand Duchy of Luxembourg”, followed by a neutral country status in the 1870s. It was also provided with a parliament and a democratic status, comparable to the British system. The title as of Luxembourgish Grand Duchy is inherited. At the moment, Grand Duchy Henri of Nassau-Weilburg and his wife Maria Teresa are reigning over Luxembourg. Germany occupied Luxembourg twice in both World Wars forced around 12,000 Luxembourgish men to join the war and deported 8,000 persons.
