The police are coming.
Ein Brite würde wohl immer "The police are coming." sagen. Man denkt dabei an die einzelnen Polizisten.

In den USA würde man wohl auch "The police is coming." akzeptieren.
Ich persönlich würde hier das Verb im Plural verwenden.
The police are coming.
"police" ist in diesem Fall ein collective noun.
The police are... = Mehrere Polizist:innen
The police is... = Die Polizei als Institution
