The State of New York is in the Northeast of the USA and its capital is Albany. With its 19 million inhabitants it's the third largest State in the US, after California and Texas. About 7 million of these people live in NYC. It has about The mayor of NYC is since 2002 Michael Bloomberg. The City of New York consists of 5 Burroughs : Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. With 2 560 000 inhabitants Brooklyn is the biggest borough, the smallest one is Staten Island, there live only 440 000 people.

In the city, there are about 500 galleries, 200 museums, more than 150 theatres and 18.000 restaurants. There are 3 airports and one big harbour and there are about 15 000 taxis every day, that take the people wherever they want to go.

2. Until 1524 the native Americans were living in New York, when Giovanni da Verrazzano, a Florentine explorer discovered it for France. The European settlement began in September 1609 when Englishman Henry Hudson sailed to New York. He was, like Christopher Columbus looking for a western passage to Asia. In 1664 the English conquered it, made it to an colony and named it New York. In 1786 New York became independent. 2 Years later a great fire destroyed New York, and many people died. From 1788 till 1790 New York City was the capital of the United States. In the 19. Century the City crowed as fast as never before. In 1820 there lived already 150 000 people. The most people were very poor and lived in the slums, where it didn't even gave a canalisation. Many settlers came from Europe to New York, because they were searching for a "better live". But they didn't have money or an job, so they had to live in slums, too.
In the first part of the 20. century New York became a centre of Industry. To this time the first Skyscrapers were build, like the Woolworth Building in 1913,the Chrysler Building in 1930 and the Empire State Building in 1931. Like many other cities in the United States, in 1960 there were many gang wars and race riots. In the 1970s the crime increased and in 1975 the city was completely bankrupt. 1977 there was an electricity blackout for about 25 hours. Many shops or flats were depredated and the firemen had to delete about 1000 fires. In the 1980s the city reclaimed its role at the centre of the worldwide financial industry. By the 1990s the crime rates dropped drastically. It was modern, to live in the city again and a lot of immigrants especially from Latin-America and Asia arrived. And until now New York City is international very important. It's in many parts very influential, for example in global commercefinance, media, culture, art, fashionand research.

In New York City there are also a lot of sights. Now I want to show you some of this.

The most popular sight of New York City is the Statue of Liberty. I think all of you know her. Miss or Lady Liberty, how she's often called from the people, stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbour. She was a present from France to America and she should be given 1876, the centenary from the declaration of independence. But the statue wasn't completed to this time and so it was dedicated 10 years later at the 28 of October in 1886. The statue is about 43 meters high, with the basement it's about 90 meters. Since the attacks from the 11. September you aren't allowed to go into the crown like before. You only can visit a museum in the basement.

The Broadway- it's a 25 kilometres long street with shops, theatres and musicals. The most famous part of it is the Times Square. It's that place, where the Broadway crosses the 7th Avenue. The Times Square got his name from the newspaper "The New York Times". There are about 40 theatres but also fast-food-restaurants and souvenir shops, cinemas, very expensive restaurants, the MTV-Studios, Toys'R'Us and Sony. But most significant at Time Square is the huge number of animated and LED signs. Especially in the night it looks great, when you see the bright and colourful signs.

The next sign, that I want show you is Brooklyn Bridge. It's one of the oldest suspension bridges in the US. The Bridge is 483 meters long and connects Brooklyn with Manhattan. The building of Brooklyn Bridge started 1869 and took 14 years. 6000 people worked at the bridge and 27 of them died during their work. At the day of opening there were already 1800 cars and 150.300 people to go over the bridge. To this time every car had to pay 5 cents and every people 1 cent, now it's free.

Now I'll tell you something about the Empire State Building. It's a 381 meter high Skyscraper. Until 1972 it has been the highest building in New York and in the world. And till the WTC is completed again it is the highest building in New York. It has 102 storeys with offices. It's one of the most visited attractions in the city. Every year about 4 million people go on the 86. or 102 storey, only for the view.

You can also go to Madison Square Garden when you are in New York. The Garden, how it's often called, was build in 1890. at this Time it was used as an place for circus. Now there are sport events or concerts. The Basketball Team "The New York Knicks" or the Ice hockey Team "New York Rangers" often play there. Also many famous music stars have given there their concerts already. For example Madonna, John Lennon, Elvis Presley or The Rolling Stones. Elton John has already given 60 concerts there.

In New York there are also about 1700 parks but I only want to show you the most famous. Central Park is in Manhattan and takes about 3,4 square kilometres. In the park, there is the Jacqueline- Kennedy- Onassis- Reservoir, that's a big lake, in the southern part of the park you can find a zoo and there's also the museum of art. Every year about 25 Million people visit the park. Many tourists but also a lot of Americans. You can go for a walk, go jogging or riding your bike. You can relax on a bank or in the grass. In the summer you can swim in the lake or lie in the sun and in the winter you can go ice-skating.

Now I want to tell you about the World Trade Center or short the WTC. It was a complex of 7 buildings, but the most popular of these were The Twin Towers. WTC 1 had an high of 417 and WTC2 415 meters and both of them had 110 storeys. They were built between 1966 and 1973. In the buildings were offices and restaurants. Every day about 50.000 people came there to work and 80.000 tourists to eat in the restaurants or to have a great view over New York. But it has already given 2 attacks at the WTC. 1993 terrorists put a rented van with about 700 kilos of dynamite. With this they blasted 4 of the 6 storeys in the underground. This explosion damaged 7 storeys completely. 6 people died and more than 1000 were hurt. The 6 terrorist got a prison sentence of 240 years. The second attack was on the 11. September 2001. Terrorists kidnapped 2 passenger plains. At 8:46 the first flew into the North Tower. Everybody thought it was an accident and so they told the people in the other buildings to stay calm. 17 minutes later the second plane arrived and flew into WTC 2. The most of the people in the buildings could escape, even if the lifts were damaged, but about 2.800 people died in the building and 343 fire fighters during their mission. The other 5 buildings were damaged by fire or parts of the Twin-Towers that were falling down. After that attack the area of the WTC is also called Ground Zero It was completely cleaned in May 2002 again. Now there is a memorial. You can see the footprints of the Twin-Towers. 2006 they started to build a new World Trade Center, a complex of 4 buildings. They will be completed 2013 or 2014.
