Writing task
Express your opinion on the topic of alcohol for children/teenagers in Germany. Why do you think so many teenagers drink before it’s legal? Should the drinking age be raised to 18? Support your opinion with arguments and examples from your experience. Write at least 180 words. Please type your essay and hand it in on Monday (04.06.12).
In Germany, many young people start to consume alcohol. The age to legally drink alcohol is 16 years, but many young people already start with 12 or 13 to drink it. But why they do it? Many young people (even children) want to feel cool, they noted that older people create awareness of alcohol and try this also. Many others also want to break rules and love to break rules. The young want to feel more grown up than they are and they want to try something new. For some people it is simply a sign that they are cooler than others and they want to prove to others that they can drink more alcohol. The result is also very famous: binge drinking. By family, school or personal problems, many young people see only one way, by getting drunk, they feel free and have fun. Unfortunately, it is also true that many young people are forced to drink alcohol. Give look at an example, when friends start to drink, others are often forced to do the same, otherwise they would no longer include to the group. Whether to drink alcohol at the age of 18 or 21 (as in the U.S.) should be upgraded, I cannot say exactly. I think it's ok if you drink a glass of, but I think many young people take advantage of it and get drunk so much that they even have to go to the hospital. But what would happen if the age would be upgraded? It would encourage more young people to break the rules and they would do it more often than now.
