In the extract from the novel "Slam" written by Nick Hornby the main character Sam can be characterized as very afraid.
To begin with I have to point out that he shows a very shy and reserved behaviour. This becomes obvious by the passage "I love you" in line 31. Here the afraid behaviour is revealed because he is to shy to talk with his mother about his request and say so only "I love you".
The behaviour can also be described as naive. This becomes obvious by the passage "I tried to think of some other things that could make her that way" in line 47-48. Here the afraid behaviour is revealed because he want that she tells him others news as that what he is thinking about and afraid too.
Therefore, the main character of the novel can be characterized as afraid.
