Presentation:

Before we begin our presentation, you get a piece of paper. Here are the new words on it that we need during our lecture.

Our presentation is about “The Great Fire of 1835”.

First, I'd like to talk about when and where the fire happened. The 16th of December the fire began in the evening and went on 17th of December in 1835. And now I would like to go on to this map and show you where the fire began. Here, where you can see the yellow x [eks], there is the place, where the fire started. It was a five-story warehouse at twenty-five Merchant Street (now called Beaver Street) at the intersection with Pearl Street between Hanover Square, Manhattan and Wall Street in the snow-covered city. And a winds blowing blew the fire from the northwest towards the East River.

Second, I'd like to talk about what happened in 1835, what were the problems and why the great fire started. The red areas, you can see, too, show city blocks destroyed by fire. More than 6oo homes fell victim to the fire. And now the exact sequence: At nine o'clock night watchman discovered the source of the smoke: a large warehouse, dangerously close to some of New York City's most prominent buildings, was in flames. He phoned to the police and the fire department also arrived quickly. The fire was still contained in the warehouse, but this didn't last long. Thanks to brutal winds the fire also burned fifty other buildings and that was not the only problem. Also the strong winter was the problem, too. The temperature had fallen to below zero and fire hydrants froze. So that the fire department didn't had no water. The East River was covered with a lot of ice. The firefighters cut holes in the river, so they got water. But the water froze in the hoses. So the firefighters poured brandy on the engines and into their boots to melt the ice, that was everywhere. The fire raged on. And then it got bigger and bigger. Firefighters made the bells ring out. They needed the help of volunteers from New Jersey and other parts of the city that no longer burned at the fire. In the end, the fire had to burn itself out and it destroyed much of the area between Broadway and Pearl Street in the banking district. An investigation reported that the cause of the fire was a gas pipe burst that was ignited by a coal stove.

Are there questions on that last point? OK, then I will go on to the question what now. Through the fire had to be built new improved water supplies, now known as the Old Croton Aqueduct, and a reform and expansion of the fire service. As a result, this was the last great fire of New York.

Ich bedanke mich schon im Voraus ! ;-)
