Ob Zeichnungen im Islam erlaubt sind, lässt sich nicht eindeutig sagen, da je nach Rechtsschule durchaus unterschiedliche Sichtweisen gibt.

Folgende Sichtweise gibt es zum Propheten Muhammad (s.):

Unter Muslimen gibt es sehr unterschiedliche Auffassungen über die bildliche Darstellung. Allerdings herrscht Konsens darüber, dass die wirklich heiligen Persönlichkeiten, wie z.B. der Prophet Muhammad (s.), selbst nicht dargestellt werden sollten, weil jede Darstellung solch heiliger Personen die Gefahr einer Entwürdigung beinhaltet. Daran haben sich auch alle muslimischen Gruppen gehalten, so dass kaum bildliche Darstellungen über den Propheten des Islam in den Geschichtsbüchern auffindbar sind, worin sein Gesicht zu erkennen wäre.

Zudem hat Ayatollah Ali Al-Sistani zum Thema Malerei und zu Zeichnungen Stellung genommen:

Question: Is it permissible to draw or produce a scene which shows the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.), one of the past prophets or the infallible Imams (a.s.), or other luminaries and show it in cinema, on television or theatre?

Answer: If due deference and respect is observed, and the scene does not contain anything that would detract from their holy pictures in the minds [of the viewers], there is no problem.

 Question: In some Western countries, artists sit on the kerb of public footpaths and paint pictures of those who wish to get their portraits drawn for a fee. They do so by asking their customers to pose for them, and then carefully observe their faces in order to paint their portraits. Is it permissible for a woman with hijãb to ask the artist to draw her picture?

Answer: She should not do so.

Question: Students are asked to draw a human being or an animal; the requirement is such that it is difficult for the student to refuse the assignment. Are they allowed to do the drawing?

Answer: Drawing a non-sculptured figure is allowed. It is allowed to draw a human being or an animal on a piece of paper or something.

Question: What is the ruling if one is asked to do a sculpture work?

Answer: Based on obligatory precaution, it is necessary to refrain from drawing a sculptured (embossed) picture of a living being.
