Daniel DEFOE finished his book Robinson Crusoe in 1719. Most people agree that the "real" Robinson Crusoe was ALEXANDER Selkirk. Selkirk was born in 1676 in LOWER LARGO, SCOTTLAND. He went to sea when he was 19. In 1704 Selkirk worked on the ship CINQUE PORTS. When the ship stopped at a small island off the coast of CHILE (ISLA MAS A TIERRA), Selkirk said the ship was not safe and they should repair it. The captain said no. After an ARGUE, Selkirk decided to stay on the island. He was there for FOUR YEARS AND FOUR MONTHS. An english ship, the DUKE, found him in 1709 and brought Selkirk back to England. He probably met Daniel DEFOE at the LLANDOGER TROW Pub in Bristol and told him his story. You can still visit the pub today.
