The narrator of the story sits in the car with four friends. They drive around and don't know what they can do. So the narrator seems to be very bored because he thinks that the evening will be a “total loss” (l.3). But he thinks that will be more interesting than sitting at home. (ll.3-5). One of his friends have an idea. They drive slowly, open the door and knock somebody down. But the narrator is presented as a doubtful man. He says to the other that he thinks that isn't a good idea because the boy can calls the police (l.20). He creates the impression that he feels very uneasy about this because he doesn't laugh or say anything (ll.27-29). It's characteristic of him that he is reasonable because he sees the seriousness of the situation when the other boys only laughing about her plan (l.33). The situation gets out of control and the boys crash somebody very hard. The narrator realizes that he knows the person. The narrator shows that he is a faithful man because he wants to stop the car but the driver is only scared about the situation (ll.46-48). The narrator is presented as a person who is frightened. This behaviour clearly shows when he sits on the back seat and starts to shiver (ll.52f.). Another dominant aspect of him is that he seems to be thoughtful. This becomes obvious when he thinks about what can happened when the police catches the boys (ll.67f.). Although the car behind the boys is away the narrator can't ignores the happened things. We might can draw the conclusion that he has a very bad conscience. This character feature manifests when he comes at home and instead of going into his bed, he listened to the radio an thinks about the happened things (ll.76f). Also he has an inner conflict with his conscience. That shows us that he is very confused and overwhelmed with the situation. Proof of this can be found when he blames oneself for the accident (ll.85-87). The essential trait of his personality is that he is a honest person. This becomes obvious when he drives to the boys home although he knows that the boy isn't really hurt (ll.97-102).

Danke! (:
