in the street oder on the street?

in meinem Englisch-Buch steht im Vokabelteil dieser Beispielsatz:

What would you do if you found a 500-euros note in the street?

Warum heißt es "in the street" und nicht "on the street"? Oder geht da beides?

Hängt u.a. davon ab, ob es BE oder AE ist.
