Very good question. Nobody really knows it except Zayn himself, we all can just assume things. But since a Modest manager who obviously knows more than us spoke about it on Twitter and what they said makes very much sense, I’ll put it in my own words; Zayn didn’t leave because he hated the boys or the music genre. Of course it’s not his personal genre and his recent music is better but he loved the boys, this was his home, he was happy. Still, he had to leave the band. He was forced by the management because he had a lot of arguments with them and he also became pretty close with a person they didn’t want him to be close with. He loved that one person so much, that he decided to leave the band for them. Very honorable and amazing decision, but it also kind of ruined his mental health. Zayn is a great man and he’s fine nowadays. I really do admire that man.
