Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was one of the most important leaders of the twentieth century. Gandhi was born in Gujarat, Western India, in 1869. He grew up surrounded by religious traditions of compassion, vegatarianism and tolerance for all people. At the age of 13, he was married to Kasturbai Narkanji. Four sons were born from this marriage. The marriage of the two existed until Kasturbais death. His family belonged to the high society of the country, so he had the opportunity to complete a law dagree in London. He returned after graduation to India, from where he soon broke after South Africa, to take over a case. When it became clear to him how much the Indian immigrants in South Africa were suppressed, he began his non-violent struggle for the discrimination. When he returned in 1914 after India, he took up the fight against British colonial rule. He called on his fellow men to boycott the British and he tried to unite the different religions with each other.
A demonstration, to which Gandhi had called, resulted in violent attacks. Mahatma Gandhi began fastig to show that he did penance. At the next meeting in the same month the protesters by the British were attacked, seriously injured and killed. Total were about 300 unarmed people killed in this attack. In 1920, Gandhi came his achieving Indian independence a step closer. He became a member oft he Indian National Congrees. In 1922, he was trying to keep the demonstration peaceful. However, several police officers were killed. He was sentenced to a prison term of 6 years. But he came out after 2 years. The salt march launched by Gandhi began in 1930. People protested in a 385 kilometer-long march against the salt tax. Again, the police officers reacted violently and many people were injured. Many of the protesters, even Mahatma Gandhi, were detained. The violent actions of the British police caused international protests, so that Gandhi was released again after a year. He has reached the abolishing of the salt tax. Now, every citizen could extract salt and sell.
The British put Gandhi in prison – but the publicity of the march persuaded many people that the British were losing control of their colony. Gandhi wanted one independent country with equal rights for people of all religions, but many Muslims wanted their own country. So two independent countries were born: India (manjority Hindu) and Pakistan (a Muslim country). Soon afterwards Muslims and Hindus fought each other in bouth countries. Gandhi tried to stop all this violence. At the age of 78, he stopped eating. He said he wouldn’t eat again till al the frighting stopped. 5 days later there was peace. It was perhaps Gandhis greatest victory. But he paid for it – on January 30th a Hindu extremist who wanted violence shot Gandhi.
