Imagine you are on a big ceremony with more than 300 people, who are well dressed. Women wear elegant dresses with high heels and men are wearing a suit. You hear music and see people dancing and then you see an 8- year old boy who is wearing a traditional dexterous, and looks like a little “Sultan”. Welcome to the circumcision party of an 8 year old Muslim boy.
Yeah you are hearing right and it sounds really weird, but that is a normal tradition in Turkey. In Islam the boys are circumcised. This usually happens between the ages of 1 to 10.Mostly the boy is already informed about that years before by his parents and gets of course afraid of the surgical intervention. But mostly there is also a great anticipation, because the boy is promised toys and money. When the time comes the preparations are usually planned months before. Of course it depends on the economical situation of the family how big the celebration will be.
On the circumcision day the boy is driven through the village on a horse or in a carriage and go to the ceremony place, where he waits for the man who will circumcise him. Mostly the boy runs away just before it and hides himself, because he gets scared and the whole family and villagers starts looking for him. But it is more or less a cliché. After they found him, the circumciser, who is mostly a villager, does the surgery within seconds, without anesthesia. After this it is also often said that he has now become a “real” man.The boy is then wearing a special dexterous, which is like a “dress”, because he is not able to wear a pant anymore. Of course the boy cannot stand and is laying on the bed, which is in the middle of the ceremony place and everybody can look for him. After the guests had danced and ate at the ceremony, they can give the boy toys, money or gold. This kind of ceremony is no longer so common, only in little villages.Today the circumcision take place in a hospital with a local anesthesia. The healing process is faster. Often the celebration takes place weeks or months after the circumcision, so the boy can stand and play with his friends at the party and enjoy himself. Besides, it wouldn’t be so uncomfortable for him.
It sound funny and weird that you celebrate the circumcision of a young boy. And yes we did it for my brother five years ago too. And if I am thinking about it now, it is very weird, that you celebrate this and pay more than thousand Euro for this ceremony, but this is how the Turkish tradition is. All in all it is a great memory for the family members and of course for the boy too- When else are you gonna get so much money and toys for such a “little” thing?
