Guten Abend zusammen, ich habe eine kurze Analyse auf englisch zu dem Gedicht
"Is a Photograph of me" geschrieben.
In the poem “This is a photograph of me” by Margaret Atwood, the speaker describes a photograph in which the scenery of the speaker’s death by drowning is portrayed. However, I believe that the speaker points towards a depression rather than speaking of actual death and that the photograph represent the emotional state that the speaker is in.
The speaker says that the photograph was taken that day after they drowned. This means that there was possibly a major event or several events that triggered a depression.
The speaker is “in the center” (17) of the lake, “just under the surface” (18). This means that it could be obvious that the speaker suffers from depression. However, the fact that “the effect of water on light is a distortion” (22, 23) could mean that the speaker pretends to be fine. This leads to no one noticing the depression.
This is supported by the description of the landscape. There is a “part of a tree”(8), a “small frame house” (11) and some low hills (14). They are symbols for the world around the speaker seeming to be in harmony, while their actually in a depressive state.
“It was taken some time ago” (1) leaves it open whether the speaker has recovered from their depression or not, but in the final stanza it seemed like there was no one really to help them or that it is already to late for possible help.
To conclude, they way the speaker describes to scenery of the photograph indicates that it represents the speaker’s depression.
