Hey hätte jemand Lust und Zeit meinen Text Korrektur zu lesen und mir ein Feedback geben.
Don´t be such a pussy” or "Don´t behave like a little sissy". I cannot count how many times I have heard these sentences or said them myself. You probably ask me why I say something like this. Well boys and men tend to say stupid things, sometimes for a reason, other times just to fool around. It is kind of normal, especially if you are a member of a sports club. I guess we all know this mate who received a really minor injury during a match and is bitching and moaning even weeks later about it. Sounds confusing? Believe me it works. Fooling around in dire situations can certainly relieve pressure and raise the moral of a team.
So far, so good. But why do I mention these daily life examples? Well because these phrases are part of our cultural programming. "Feminism" is one theory which deals with cultural programming. Some people are highly sceptical about the viewpoint of this theory. Other sees it as a game changer to regard things finally in the appropriate manner. At least it’s fair to say that "Feminism" is a highly discussed and controversial topic.
What does feminism mean? Lois Tyson says, “Feminists don´t deny the biological differences between men and women; in fact, many feminists celebrate those differences" (Tyson 86). Feminism distinguishes between the words "sex" and "gender". Sex refers to the biological differences between men and women (Tyson 86). Gender refers to the learnt social programming of being a feminine or masculine type (Tyson 86). But it also criticizes that this view is incorrect. For instance Tyson mentions the example that men and women can be feminine or masculine in their attitude (Tyson 86). For him these gender categories are an artificial construction crafted by society (Tyson 86). It´s purpose is to save the patriarchal system, which in short terms, displays that women are inferior to men (Tyson 86).
Typical masculine values are: to be a strong provider for the family, being emotionally and physically strong, and to be able to control emotions even in dire situations ( Tyson 87). On the other hand feminine behaviour is often described as: emotional overloaded which leads to hysteria, to be supportive to the men, and being the most beautiful ( Tyson 87).
I will exemplify several of these points with the Movie 300 and refer to Tyson’s Theory. The main male character is King Leonidas, the King of the ancient Sparta. He is showcased as a physically very strong character. Besides he is the head of the Spartan Empire and demonstrates that he is able to stay mentally cool even in dire situations. This is portrayed in a very famous scene, in which he gets threatened by a diplomat. Due to his stoic and calm behaviour he is able to beat this difficult situation.
