The speech of Barack Obama which is spoken in Springfield in 2007, deals with the past of America and its consequences.
Obama talks about the past of America. Although there was tyranny or the secession of the country, the unified a nation and did good things like lifting millions out of poverty. One of the people who has understood that was Abraham Lincoln. Even he had his defeats he moved a nation and helped America a lot. So after his death there were still wars and it happens bad things in the world but Obama wants that America can stop it and help others.
In the first paragraph Obama uses three times a personification and a parallelism at the same time "In the face of Tyranny..." " [...] of secession" " [...] of Depression"(ll.2-4) So with these stylistic devices at the beginning he wants to focus on the issues that America had. There was tyranny, the secession of the North and the South of America and the World Wars. But in the next sentences he mentions the good things America did like putting people back to work or welcoming new immigrants. He uses the including "we" to show that every American helped and not only single persons(ll.4-5). Then there is a simile and metaphor " [...] justice run down like water" "righteousness like a mighty stream"(ll.6-7). With this Obama wants to cause the audience to create a picture in their mind and to understand justice a little bit better. ....
