1.What is the American Dream ?
First the American Dream hasn´t got an exact or uniform definition. Probably every American has his own dream . For some people the dream is to have a big house, a good car, to be rich and famous. For other people it is the dream to live in equality and freedom. In general, you can say that it is an attitude in the United States of America. Everyone has the freedom to achieve their goals if they work hard enough. It doesn´t matter where you come from, what kind of family you grew up in, how much money your parents have... What matters is that if you work hard you can achieve success. There are famous quotes for example: From rags to riches or From dishwasher to a millionaire.
The American Dream first was used by the American historian James Trustlow Adams in his book “The Epic of America” in 1931. “That dream of a land in which life should be better and richer for everyone, with the opportunity for everyone according to ability or achievement” But the ideas behind it existed before, when the first settlers arrived to America in the 17th century. They were protestants from England. The protestants hoped to get religious freedom. Bad living conditions in Europe draw more and more settlers into the new world. In Europe there was a religious and politician oppression. So they hoped to get freedom, less poverty and a classless society. The basic idea is even a part of the American Deceleration of Independence from 1776. There is explained that all men are created equal but not women, slaves and native Americans and that life includes freedom and the pursuit of happiness. So these persons didn´t have the possibility to achieve the American dream.
2.1Why was the American Dream in America possible?
The reason for this was that in Europe at this time a class society ruled and the European had an absolutist ruler. The people never had the possibility in their country to have a success as the American Dream promised.
3.Is it a myth or is it reality?
The American Dream is both a myth and reality. If everybody could really achieve success by working hard, it would be great success in many cases, but that isn´t the way things are. When everybody could make it to the top, then suddenly all would be at the top. There is only a top it if there is something under it.Those who haven´t made it. Not everybody can be successful. Sure for some people the American Dream came true so it is reality for them. But there are millions of people who haven´t been successful, they are Americans, but they don´t live any dream at all even if they work hard.
4.Is the American Dream still alive today ? The American Dream is very hard to achieve because nowadays it is very hard to get from the bottom into the top. For example the quote from dishwasher to a millionaire is almost impossible. A dishwasher works hard, but it isn´t enough to get rich or even to have a good life. There are many more examples.
