The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster is a series of a major accident, nuclear meltdowns, and releases of radioactive materials at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, following the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami on 11 March 2011. It is the biggest nuclear disaster since the Chernobyl disaster of 1986.
On 11 March 2011 at 14:47 clock (local time) The series began with the Tohoku earthquake. It damaged four from six reactors. In block 1-3, it came to a meltdown. Large quantities of radioactive material - about 10 to 20 percent of the radioactive emissions from Chernobyl - were released and contaminated air, soil, water and food in the land-and sea-side environment. About 100,000 to 150,000 inhabitants had to leave the area temporarily or permanently. Hundreds of thousands of abandoned animals on farms died of starvation.
Japanese officials initially assessed the accident as Level 4 on the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES) despite the views of other international agencies that it should be higher. The level was raised to 5 and eventually to 7, the maximum scale value
Four of the six reactors of the power station were destroyed by the accident. According to a statement from the Japanese government, that the whole power plant will be abandoned. The Statement is from the 20th march 2011. A desicision for the still functioning reactors 5 and 6 was not took yet. ( 30 November 2011). The disposal operations are expected to be 30-40 years.
The coverage of the disaster led many countries to a greater skepticism or a change of mood at the expense of the civilian use of nuclear energy. Several countries abandoned their nuclear programs.
