Eric Clapton's clothes shop hit by blaze

(Sri Carmichael, Consumer Affairs Reporter, 18.12.2009)

A Piccadilly gentleman's outfitter half-owned by rock star Eric Clapton has suffered a "huge blow" after a fire ruined its entire Christmas stock. Cordings, which has been dressing the wealthy since 1839, was forced to close after more than £200,000 of countrywear had to be binned because of smoke damage. The fire was caused by water leaking into electrics in the basement. The shop plans to reopen tomorrow and its website was back up and running on Tuesday, with a limited range of stock. Clapton, who is also a design director, was taking a "keen interest" in repairs and said: "I want to assure customers that it will be business as normal come tomorrow."
