In 2011 - in which the Fukushima catastrophe happened - has Germany decided to stop to production of nuclear power. During our country abolish this way of energy production, other lands build new nuclear power plants. The opinion of the population is deeply divided.
To begin with, nuclear energy is the cheapest form of producing energy. Other forms of production are up to 100 % more expensive. To continue to meet the power consumption, new power plants must be built. These new facilities are paid by electricity consumers, meaning higher electricity prices. No form of energy generation is therefore cheaper.
In contrast to that, the most popular problem is about the rubbish, which is left after the process.
This highly radioactive material is dangerous for the next hundred thousand years.
The question of storage of these substances is not answered to this day and one of the biggest problems. However, this process causes no carbondioxid like gas power staions, which damage the enviroment.
Thirdly, the security of supply, is an very important point. For a country like Germany, which is dependent on the import of raw materials, nuclear energy is a contribution to security of supply. Oil and gas must be imported from politically unstable regions - from the Middle East or Russia. Although uranium must also be introduced, but the fuel rods can be stored longer.
On the other hand Germany is one hundred percent dependent on imports. The resources are not unlimited. Given the ambitious plans of countries like China in the expansion of nuclear power, there is a run on uranium. In a few decades, threatening shortages.
Above all, we have to ask, wether it is really usefull to stop this production way, when other contrys like france oder china are building new staions all around us. Worldwide, there are 170 projects with about 560 reactors in the planning. In China, is built on 20 atomic sites, for more than 30 building permits are available. Also, India and Russia are planning many projects. But also in France and the UK systems are planned. Many problems of nuclear power are not really abolished by ban nuclear power from Germnay, while only 50 kilometers behind the border a new power station is build.
In conclusion to that points, the nuclear phase-out in Germany has advantages and disadvantages.
Some really big problems can not be eliminated by Germany alone.
To really achieve successes in this direction, more states need to work on this goal and work together to find alternatives.
If further new staions are build, the way out of the nuclear energy may not produce the desired results. One thing is clear, the results of nuclear phase-out we know in a few years
