The rod is hollow up to the half, because a rectangular piece has been removed. The rest of the rod is solid.

so aus dem Zusammenhang gerissen schwer zu sagen aber sieht nicht gut aus.. ist im Zusammenhang jedoch warscheinlich verständlich. 'up to the half' ist nicht gut, das benutzt man so nicht. 'the bottom half of the rod is hollow, the top half solid.' oder anders herum eben - hört sich deutlich besser an.
Ich möchte nur mal anmerken, dass die Wurzel im passiv steht, zumindest das Verb. Die Wurzel ist ja hohl. Und das ist sie nicht aktiv. Also muss es "hollowed up to the half" heißen. Oder eben wie bei deinem Vorschlag "the bottom half of the rod is hollowed, the top half solid."
