Advertising is a message designed to promote products and persuade people to buy a product, a service or an idea. These advertising messages can be found on television, in newspapers and magazines, on the radio and on the Internet as well as on outdoor signs. The average person is targeted with at least 3,000 ad messages per day. In order to get these hundreds of thousands of messages to their target group advertisers spend over 220 billions dollars a year. Breaking the billions of dollars down to the number of people in the American population it would equal out to be 700 dollars of manipulation money spent per person. With all these images, jingles, ideas, and desires added into our memory bank, one must consider the advantages and disadvantages commercial advertising has on the public.

The first criticism is that advertising manipulates us into buying things we don't need. This is because it entices us to buy things, often by projecting negative emotions such as fear, anxiety or guilt upon the consumer. It is also claimed that advertising plays with our basic human needs for survival - as determined by Maslow. Some say if we stick to our basic needs such as a set of clothes, a shelter, and some daily food then advertisers are asking us to buy what we don't need. The opposing side feels that once we meet these basic needs, as Maslow said, then we become concerned with other needs, such as safety and a number of social needs in which advertising plays a role.

Another point of criticism is that the high cost of advertising is covered by increasing the selling price of the advertised goods. A company has to spend large amount on advertising. It increases the cost of the products. To meet this expenditure the price of the product is raised. No manufacturer pays for the advertising expenses out of his own pocket. Advertising, therefore, leads to an unnecessary rise in prices.  It is also said that advertising costs are passed on to the consumers in the form of high prices.

On the other hand, there are also some advantages of advertising. One positive aspect of of advertising is that it provides information about certain products. Advertisements bring product information to the consumer, especially when the product is new. An ad describes the latest trend of a new product  providing an explanation on how it works.

The second advantage of advertising is that it raises the standard of living of the consumer. It provides knowledge about the new design of the product for consumers and thus consumers use those products and increase their standard of living.


Wie du siehst, habe ich deinen Text nur an ein paar wenigen Stellen leicht verändert.

Hier ein Text, auf den ich gestern zufällig gestoßen bin. Vielleicht kannst du ja den einen oder anderen Gedanken noch einarbeiten. Die meisten Argumente hast du aber sowieso schon erwähnt:

There are many contrasting opinions about advertising.

Those in favour say that advertising educates consumers about new products and services that can help them improve their lives. It also increases sales so that companies can produce things at lower costs and make things cheaper.

They say that advertising helps the economy and gives jobs to many people. Without advertising some free radio and TV channels wouldn't be able to exist. Sporting and other events are sponsored by ads. Ticket prices would be higher without advertisements.


On the other hand, critics say that consumers pay for advertising through higher product prices. They say that small companies sometimes have to close because they cannot compete with larger ones.

Through advertising, people sometimes buy products that they may not need and often cannot afford. This leads to a higher personal debt. It also leads to a throwaway society – goods are thrown away and more pollution and waste is produced.

Children are very often the main target of advertisers. They sometimes don't know which products are good for them and buy the wrong things. Fast food and snack companies show ads, which lead to\_medicine/childhood-obesity/causes-and-risks-of-childhood-obesity.htm">obesity and  diabetes.

Gut geschrieben!

Das Einzige das mir auf die Schnelle auffaellt ist im dritten Absatz ein Tippfehler...
"Another point of criticism ist (=is, kein 't') that..."

Vielleicht finden die Englisch-Experten ja noch mehr ;)

Das ist ein "Tippfehler", den meistens das Rechtschreibprogramm produziert.


Das ist mir aufgefallen (bin aber kein Experte, also mit Vorsicht "genießen"):

Die Kommasetzung solltest Du vielleicht auch noch mal überprüfen, aber damit kenne ich mich nicht aus.
