She was one of the best players on her school team and spent most of her free time training hard. Angrily, she had started whispering to Lindsay and Anita. Anita was a bit shy and hadn´t said much. Bute she seemed to be very friendly and laughed loudly when Brandon told them funny stories about his life in the small town of Muscatine, lowa. Charlie thought that maybe Anita had a crush on Brandon because she always blushed when he looked at her. Brandon was a nice guy who knew a lot about all the activities to come. "You know, I´ve been looking forward to this for months. Muscatine is great, but like I told you it´s not very exciting. So I guess it´ll be awesome to spedn a few weeks in the wilderness. I´m really excited..."
It was early the next morning when the group met after breeakfast. "For some of you this will be your first country hike...," Matt, the counselor, started.
"Not for me !" Scott said. " I´ve been backpacking before in Yosemite and the Grand Canyon."
Patricia rolled her eyes and was about to say something, but Lindsay said quickly: "I thought you didn´t need any experience."
"Yeah, you´re absolutely right," Matt answered. " We welcome experienced hikers and beginners on our trip and I´m sure you´ll all enjoy the thermal hot springs and geysers we´ll see along the way. Bute before we start, let´s clean this place up. Unfortuneately a lot of visitors to the parks aren´t considerate enough. They walk all over the plants or they leave their trash behind. One of our aims is to teach you how to leave a camp so others may enjoy it as well"
They all started to collect the trash. When Patricia spotted a can, she kicked it into the bushed. "Whoa, that was at leat 20 yards!" But Matt wasn´t amused and Brandon quickly got it.
"Nobody would have seen it!" Patricia said.
"Well, an animal could hurt itself on a can ," Brandon told her. "I have a dog, I know. And anyway the smell might attract animals at night."
Patricia quickly collected some other cans and soon the campsite was clean.
When they left the campsite, it was beginning to get hot. Matt was walking next to Brandon and Charlie. "The landscape is really fantastic!" Charlie said.
"Breathtaking," Matt agreed. "And then there´s the wildlife. On our hike, you´ll see bison, moose, coyotes, bears, ... . But that means you must be very careful. Remember to stay on the trails."
They walked for hours and Matt told them a lot about the different plants and animals in the national park. Suddenly, they saw a dark shape ahead of them. "A moose!" Charlie thought. But then it was gone. Charlie was disappointed.
In the afternoon the group was getting tired and the cheerful mood turned into silence.Lindsay felt exhausted. Her backpack was heavy and she was getting slower and slower. "GEE, Lindsay this ain´t window-shopping! We´ve been waiting for you all day. Try to keep up!" Scott shouted at her.
"I´m trying!" Lindsay shouted back angrily. "Why don´t you slow down? This isn´t a race, you know!"
"Can´t you see that she´s been trying to keep up?", Patricia said angrily.
Matt turned to Scott, "Hey, that´s another important rule: never lose your hiking partners!" Scott looked at him skeptically, but didn´t say anything.
They reached their campsite in the evening. Everyone was tired when Matt asked them to prepare dinner. Someone had to get water from the river.
"Your turn," Anita held the bucket in front of Scott´s face. "You´ve been talking about how fit you are all day!"
"Ha,ha very funny ... OK, I´ll go," Scott answered with a laugh.
Matt joined them: " Don´t forget to wash the cans and put them away in the containers. You have all seen the bear warnings: we don´t need any visitors tonight."
Dann Kommt eine Karte wo draufsteht:
ATTENTION Bears have large appetites. They are also very curious and have a good sense of smell. This sometimes leads them to look for food at campsites.
WHAT IS FOOD?
"Food" includes anything with a scent, for example bottles, drinks, soaps, cosmetics, trash, containers (even when empty) and cans.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Put food and cookware (clean or not) in food containers day and night. Always keep a clean camp.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE A BEAR
If it is far enough away, scare it away: Make as much noise as possible. Try to get away from the bear if possible. Do not run!
Drop something (not food) to distract the bear.
Report all bear attacks to the nearest ranger immediately.
Jetzt ist die Karte zuende3 und die Geschichte geht weiter!
A few hours later, Lindsay couldn´t sleep. She felt worried. Had she put all the food and the trash in the containers?
In the tent next to Lindsay´s, Charlie and Tim were asleep. Suddenly, Tim woke up. He heard a voice: "Hey Tim, wake up !" It was Scott.
" Man,I´ve been calling your name for hours! What d´you think about a little picnic? I saved some of the burgers."
"But all the food was put away," Tim whispered.
"Naah, man, I hid some in a tree " Scott answered. " We just have to go get it."
A few minutes later, Charlie was woken up by strange noises outside."Hey, Tim, wake up," he whisperes and turned to his cousin´s sleeping bag. It was empty
